usable bandwidth on mobile at last?

August 7, 2006

This is funny as it is totally (or nearly) unexpected. Last friday I had the chance to testdrive a brand-new 2-to-3.5G pcmcia card (which means, simply put: gprs+edge+umts+HSDPA!!!!). The HSDPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hsdpa) thing is something I got into a few months ago since I discovered a Dell Notebook with hsdpa features on board.

The unexpected thing is the network coverage in my country… I expected this not before 2k7… and.. well… here it is! ready for service NOW!

I still have to investigate and benchmark this, but the first impression is WOW! at last usable (event though not very broad) bandwidth in the palm of your hand. As I always thought… large bandwidth is pretty useless if you don’t put something cool on it, and take off the cool thing WHEREVER you want.
