the sadly famous oci8 php extension

July 31, 2006

oracle logoAfter literally years of fighting against php’s oci8 extension, maybe the “war” has come to an end.

I’ve been using the oci8 extension since the early php3 days… It followed me during years of upgrades to nearly all releases of php, up to 5.x.x. Well… apart from the (still missing) lack of connection pooling/caching mechanisms (persistent connections CANNOT be considered conn. pooling), I always got may stability problems with the php&oracle duo.

Luckily, a month or so ago, I had the pleasure/honour to meet Zeev Suraski here in my office… while talking about the evolution of php and other interesting stuff, I asked the damn question about oracle and php…. Well, it turned out that the oci8 pecl extension (pecl.php.net) has been posed under a major overhaul, and it seems that now it’s a lot more stable/flexible.

The “new” oci8 extension is now built and maintained for the 5.x branch of php… nonetheless it can be easily backported to php4.x.x, by simply replacing the existing oci8 directory under the “ext/” subdirectory, and regerating the “configure” script running buildconf in php’s source directory.

I just finished (as you might have read) to compile a couple of php engines, and included the mentioned brand-new oci8 extension. Let’s hope it finally solves the historical bugs.
